HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB menggunakan HSF non-reference dengan desain dual-slot bernama iCooler IV. Komponen HSF iCooler IV terdiri dari heasink aluminium dan kipas berdiameter 80 mm.
Walaupun penampilan HSF iCooler IV terlihat biasa saja, kemampuan HSF ini tergolong memuaskan saat kami mengujinya dengan menggunakan aplikasi Unigine Heaven 2.1.

Kami menjumpai komponen-komponen seperti solid capacitor dan ferrite core choke di HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB. HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB tidak dilengkapi konektor CrossfireX. Walaupun begitu, graphics card ini tetap dapat digabungkan dengan AMD HD 6670 lainnya untuk konfigurasi multi-GPU 2-way Crossfire. Tidak hanya itu, HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB juga dapat digabungkan dengan GPU AMD LLANO untuk menjalankan konfigurasi AMD Dual Graphics.

HIS HD 6670 Fan 1GB yang kami terima mampu di-overclock hingga 900 MHz untuk clock GPU dan 4600 MHz untuk clock memori dengan menggunakan setting kecepatan kipas Auto dan setting voltase default.

Kesimpulan

HIS HD 6670 Fan 1GB memang tidak menawarkan kelebihan di sisi kinerja karena spesifikasi yang digunakan sama seperti spesifikasi AMD HD 6670 reference. Walaupun begitu, kinerja keseluruhan HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB tergolong memuaskan untuk graphics card kelas entry-level. HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB lebih cocok digunakan untuk bermain game di resolusi rendah (seperti 1360�768, 1280�720, 1280�1024) dengan setting kualitas grafik low hingga medium walaupun tidak menutup kemungkinan untuk menggunakan setting kualitas grafik high di game tertentu.

Tidak menawarkan kelebihan di sisi kinerja justru membuat HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB menawarkan kelebihan di sisi lainnya seperti HSF iCooler IV. HSF iCooler IV yang terlihat biasa saja ternyata mampu menjaga temperatur chip GPU di bawah 60 �C dengan setting kecepatan kipas auto sehingga tingkat kebisingan terjaga di kondisi serendah mungkin.
Untuk konektivitas dengan monitor, HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB menyediakan konektor output display yang tergolong lengkap yang sudah terpasang di graphics card. Terdapat konektor D-Sub untuk monitor analog dan konektor DVI beserta HDMI untuk monitor digital dan juga LCD TV.
Satu kelebihan lagi yang ditawarkan oleh HIS HD 6670 Fan 1 GB adalah graphics card tidak memerlukan pasokan daya tambahan dari konektor daya PCIe. Hal ini membuat pengguna tidak memerlukan power supply dengan keluaran daya besar yang biasanya memiliki harga tinggi.

The Radeon HD 5000 series gave ATI a 6-month lead over the competition, during which they only saw little challenge from everyone else. When NVIDIA released its own DirectX 11 capable GPUs, things get a bit tougher. Now, ATI a.k.a AMD has returned with a brand new product and strategy. The Radeon HD 6800 series that we received represents the first wave of second-generation DirectX 11 graphics cards from AMD.

AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series

AMD used a slightly different approach for the launch of their second-generation DirectX 11 graphics chips. Unlike the high-end Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850 that shocked the world when they arrived around a year ago, the Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 �AMD�s first second-gen Dx11 chips- are both targeted at the mainstream market. There could be a little confusion here, but the products intended to replace the previous HD 5800 flagships should be the HD 6900 series, due to be released somewhere in Q4 2010. Nevertheless, judging from the technical specs, this mainstream duo should still pack quite a punch. Let�s see what they got inside.

The GPUs on both AMD Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 are codenamed �Barts� (we�re not sure if it has anything to do with that popular cartoon character). Contrary to previous rumors suggesting that AMD would be stepping ahead to 32nm fabrication, the Radeon HD 6800 series is still manufactured using the now-matured 40nm process. It appears that such move was motivated by a necessity to avoid production failures that may be caused by a newer fabrication technique. As for the next generation of chips, it seems like they will go straight to 28nm fabrication, skipping 32nm altogether.

Features

• AMD HD3D � This is one of the new features, first introduced in the AMD HD 6000 series of graphics chips. It allows the corresponding graphics card to display games and movies in 3D. The new Catalyst 10.10 driver enables Blu-ray 3D support exclusively on the Radeon HD 6000 series.
• UVD 3 � The UVD (Unified Video Decoder), is a feature that moves out video decoding processes from the processor to the graphics card, thus removing some significant weight off the CPU, leaving it with enough processing power to carry out other operations. In UVD 2, the decoder supports VC-1, H.264, dan MPEG-2 (IDCT Profile) formats, while in UVD 3, some additional formats, including Multi-View Codec (Blu-ray 3D), MPEG-2, MPEG-4 part 2 (XviD/DivX), are also supported.
• HDMI 1.4a � The HDMI port on AMD Radeon HD 6800 series has been improved to version 1.4a, allowing the graphics card to display various 3D contents, such as Blu-ray 3D.
• AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) Technology � This particular feature isn�t exactly new. It�s previously known as ATI Stream and enables the graphics card to execute non-gaming tasks, such as video encoding and the likes.
• Display Port 1.2 � This latest version of the Display Port offers wider bandwidth and the capability to channel the display to 3 different monitors simultaneously. Therefore, you can use up to six monitors by utilizing the two display port available on Radeon HD 6000 series graphics cards.

AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series � The Graphics Card

Our first sample of the Radeon HD 6000 series came from HIS. Here�s how it looks like.

Sales Package and Contents

This is the outer side packaging of HIS AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB. As usual, a rather large picture of the �Excalibur� sword can be found on the front side.

The AMD HD3D �one of the new features implemented on the Radeon HD 6000 series graphics card- logo sticker is attached on the upper right corner of the package box.

These are the package contents we found inside. There wasn�t anything too extraordinary, but all the essentials, such as the driver disc, manual book, and power/ display converters are included. There is also a Crossfire bridge in the box.

Graphics Card

In the above picture, you can see the graphics card itself, HIS AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB.



HIS is still using a reference cooler for this product. We recorded a maximum temperature of 83 degree Celsius during full load and 46 degree Celsius when idle. This rather worrying temperature is caused by the fan�s low RPM rate when set on �Auto� mode. It was only working at 35% of its maximum capacity as the graphics chips gets under full load, just enough to keep the temperature from going beyond 83 degree. When everything settles down and the graphics card was reverted to idle state, the fan drops back to 24% working capacity. By increasing the fan�s spin rate to 50%, we managed to press the temperature down at the cost of louder noise. Increasing that number further to 100% will cause the fan to generate intolerable noise, in our opinion.

The AMD Radeon HD 6870 provides a relatively complete array of display connectors, including two DVI ports, one HDMI 1.4a, and two Display Port 1.2 connectors.

You will need at least a 500 Watt PSU. Power is supplied to the AMD Radeon HD 6870 through a pair of 6-pin PCI-Express connectors.

This is the Crossfire connector on top of the card. Since there�s only one connector available, it looks like you won�t be able to link more than two Radeon HD 6870 series graphics cards in Crossfire mode. Right next to the connector, there�s an additional exhaust opening to vent out hot air from the center area of the cooler.

Conclusions

AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series

AMD relies on brand new products and strategy to compete in today�s DirectX 11-dominated market. Slightly different from the introduction of the HD 5000 series a while back �when the first line of the series to be released was a high-end product- this time they get the HD 6000 series started off with a mainstream card. This kind of strategy isn�t exactly new, as it was also used for the HD 4000 series. The HD 6800 series is positioned at the same spot currently occupied by the GeForce GTX 460 series of GPU from NVIDIA, which also happens to be one of the most important categories of the market for both brands since this particular segment usually contains well-balanced cards in terms of price-performance ratio, sought after by numerous consumers.
As the latest offerings from AMD, the Radeon HD 6000 series are equipped with a number of new features, including the AMD HD3D, UVD 3, and HDMI 1.4a. You can use some of these features immediately, but some others would each require a specific third-party application and/ or device before they can be deployed. Take, for example, the AMD HD3D that supports the Blu-ray 3D content. Before you can enjoy 3D effects on your screen, you will need a Blue-ray 3D player software, and a 3D monitor complimented with a 3D glasses.

(HIS) AMD Radeon HD 6870

The AMD Radeon HD 6870, codenamed �Barts XT�, is one of the two new graphics chips belonging to the HD 6800 series. It currently retails at around US$ 239 and goes nearly head-to-head with NVIDIA�s GeForce GTX 460 1GB, which now sells for around US$ 199 (after previously being offered for around US$ 229).
According to our test results, the AMD Radeon HD 6870 offers good performance for its price. In all our DirectX 11 benchmark softwares �with one exception for Metro 2033- the frame rate stayed well above 30 FPS. From the performance stand point, it�s toe-to-toe with the GeForce GTX 460 1 GB. In Dirt 2, the GeForce GTX 460 1 GB gets ahead by a meager 2 FPS difference, while in Alien VS Predator, Lost Planet 2, and Metro 2033, the AMD Radeon HD 6870 takes over the lead. As for DirectX 9 and DirectX 10-based games, the AMD Radeon HD 6870 has more than enough muscle to run them without any noticeable slowdown.
Unfortunately, Radeon HD 6870�s stock cooler generates a lot of noise when operating in high speed mode. Changing the fan setting to �Auto� reduces the sound significantly, but consequently, the temperature could rise to well over 80 degree Celsius under full load conditions. Let�s just hope that there would be some third-party coolers that are both quieter and better at suppressing the heat from this product.

Happy Birthday! Akhirnya graphics card DirectX 11 generasi kedua dari AMD (ATI) dilahirkan. Ya, setahun sudah berlalu sejak AMD (ATI) memperkenalkan graphics card DirectX 11 pertama mereka HD 5000. Selama hampir enam bulan, HD 5000 menguasai pasar graphics card DirectX 11 sebelum akhirnya NVIDIA juga merilis graphics card DirectX 11 mereka. Kini AMD (ATI) kembali ke ajang persaingan graphics card DirectX 11 dengan senjata baru dan strategi baru.

AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series

Melanjutkan seri sebelumnya, AMD Radeon HD 5000 Series, generasi kedua graphics card DirectX 11 ini masuk dalam jajaran AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series. Untuk perilisan pertama AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series, AMD merilis dua buah varian yaitu AMD Radeon HD 6870 dan AMD Radeon HD 6850. Berbeda dengan seri sebelumnya dimana HD 5870 dan HD 5850 merupakan graphics card kelas high-end, HD 6870 dan HD 6850 merupakan graphics card kelas mainstream. Jika rilisan awal ini merupakan seri mainstream, tampaknya AMD masih menyimpan senjata rahasia mereka untuk kelas high-end.

AMD Radeon HD 6870 dan AMD Radeon HD 6850 menggunakan chip dengan codename Barts (mungkin nama ini mengingatkan Anda pada sebuah tokoh kartun). AMD masih menggunakan proses fabrikasi 40 nm untuk memproduksi chip AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series.
Sempat tersiar kabar mereka akan menggunakan proses fabrikasi 32 nm untuk memproduksi chip ini. Akan tetapi, tampaknya AMD lebih memilih proses fabrikasi 40 nm karena mereka sudah mulai terbiasa dengan proses fabrikasi ini. Tampaknya juga untuk mengurangi jumlah chip yang gagal produksi karena penggunaan proses fabrikasi lebih baru. Untuk generasi selanjutnya, tampaknya mereka akan lompat ke proses fabrikasi 28 nm tanpa mengadopsi terlebih dahulu proses fabrikasi 32 nm.

• AMD HD3D � Ini adalah salah satu feature terbaru yang diusung oleh AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series. Dengan feature ini, AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series mampu menampilkan game dan film dalam format 3D. Pada driver Catalyst 10.10, AMD sudah mengaktifkan dukungan Blu-ray 3D dan feature ini hanya berjalan pada AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series.
• UVD 3 � UVD (Unified Video Decoder), merupakan feature graphics card AMD (ATI) yang memungkinkan graphics card melakukan proses decoding video/film. Biasanya proses decoding dilakukan di prosesor. Keuntungannya adalah prosesor tidak lagi terbebani dengan tugas decoding video dan dapat melakukan tugas lainnya. Pada UVD 2, decoder ini mendukung format VC-1, H.264, dan MPEG-2 (IDCT Profile). Sedangkan pada UVD 3, selain format pada UVD 2, format lainnya yang didukung adalah Multi-View Codec (Blu-ray 3D), MPEG-2, MPEG-4 part 2 (XviD/DivX).

• AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) Technology � Sebenarnya ini bukan feature terbaru dari AMD (ATI). Sebelumnya feature ini dinamakan ATI Stream. Feature ini memungkinkan aplikasi non-gaming untuk dijalankan di graphics card, tidak lagi di prosesor.
• Display Port 1.2 � Versi terbaru Display Port menawarkan bandwidth yang lebih lebar. Dengan bandwidth lebih lebar, sebuah Display Port 1.2 mampu menjalankan tiga buah monitor. Jika dua buah Display Port 1.2 pada AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series digunakan, Anda dapat menggunakan enam monitor sekaligus.

HIS masih menggunakan heatsink reference untuk produknya kali ini. Kami mencatat suhu 83 C pada kondisi full load dan 46 C pada kondisi idle. Tingginya suhu graphics card tampaknya disebabkan kurang tingginya putaran kipas jika dikonfigurasi pada kondisi Auto. Pada suhu 83 C, putaran kipas hanya berada pada kisaran 35% dan 24 % pada suhu 46 C (idle). Kami mencoba menaikkan putaran kipas ke 50%. Dengan percobaan tersebut kami berhasil menurunkan suhu graphics card namun harus dibayar dengan suara kipas yang cukup bising. Sedangkan pada kondisi putaran kipas 100 %, suara kipas tergolong bising.

AMD Radeon HD 6870 menyediakan beragam port output display seperti dua buah port DVI, sebuah port HDMI 1.4a, dan dua buah Display Port 1.2.

AMD Radeon HD 6870 membutuhkan power supply dengan daya 500 Watt yang disuplai melalui dua buah konektor power 6-pin.

Crossfire Connector. Tampaknya AMD Radeon HD 6870 hanya mendukung konfigurasi 2-way Crossfire. Tidak jauh di sebelah atas Crossfire Connector terdapat lubang ventilasi untuk membuang udara panas keluar dari graphics card.

AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series

Senjata baru dan strategi baru. Ya, graphics card AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series merupakan senjata baru mereka untuk lebih meramaikan lagi pasar persaingan graphics card DirectX 11. Untuk AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series ini, AMD (ATI) menerapkan strategi baru yang berbeda dengan strategi yang dipakai di HD 5000 Series. AMD (ATI) merilis graphics card pertama AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series untuk kelas mainstream. Strategi ini sebenarnya tidaklah benar-benar baru karena strategi ini pernah digunakan pada HD 4000 Series. Strategi ini dipilih agar graphics card terbaru dari AMD ini langsung berhadapan dengan graphics card NVIDIA GTX 460 yang juga graphics card kelas mainstream dari NVIDIA. Apalagi kelas mainstream merupakan salah satu kelas yang banyak diincar user yang menginginkan graphics card dengan kinerja yang sepadan dengan harga yang ditawarkan.
Sebagai graphics card generasi terbaru, AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series menawarkan beragam feature baru. AMD HD3D, UVD 3, HDMI 1.4a merupakan beberapa di antara sekian banyak feature yang disematkan AMD pada seri ini. Sejumlah feature tersebut dapat langsung Anda gunakan, namun beberapa feature lagi baru dapat Anda gunakan dengan bantuan aplikasi pihak ketiga. Seperti AMD HD3D yang memberikan dukungan pada Blu-ray 3D. Untuk menikmati feature Blu-ray 3D Anda membutuhkan aplikasi yang mendukung Blu-ray 3D, monitor 3D, dan juga kacamata 3D.

(HIS) AMD Radeon HD 6870

Inilah salah satu dari dua buah varian graphics card AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series yang dirilis pertama kali. AMD Radeon HD 6870 dijual pada kisaran harga US$ 239 dan merupakan lawan langsung dari NVIDIA GTX 460 1GB yang kini dijual pada kisaran harga US$ 199 (sebelumnya NVIDIA GTS 460 1GB dijual pada kisaran harga US$ 229).
Untuk harga yang ditawarkan, kinerja AMD Radeon HD 6870 tergolong memuaskan. Pada game DirectX 11, kecuali Metro 2033, AMD Radeon HD 6870 mampu menghasilkan frame rate di atas 30 fps. AMD Radeon HD 6870 memang bersaing ketat dengan NVIDIA GTX 460 1GB. Pada game DiRT 2, NVIDIA GTX 460 1GB unggul tipis sekitar 2 fps atas AMD Radeon HD 6870. Sedangkan pada game Alien VS Predator, Lost Planet 2, dan Metro 2033, AMD Radeon HD 6870 berhasil mengambil alih keunggulan. Sedangkan pada game DirectX 9 dan DirectX 10, AMD Radeon HD 6870 mampu menghasilkan frame rate di atas 60 fps. Tampaknya jika Anda berniat memainkan game DirectX 9 atau DirectX 10 dengan graphics card ini, frame rate bukanlah menjadi masalah lagi.
Cukup disayangkan, kipas pada heatsink reference AMD Radeon HD 6870 ini tergolong bising saat bekerja pada kecepatan penuh. Mengatur kipas pada setting Auto memang membuat suara bising berkurang, namun harus dibayar dengan suhu kerja graphics card yang tergolong cukup tinggi, lebih dari 80 C. Walaupun begitu, produsen graphics card pasti mempunyai solusi untuk masalah ini seperti penggunaan heatsink pihak ketiga yang menawarkan kinerja pendinginan lebih baik sekaligus tidak bising.
