ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit Review

Overview

As mentioned in my last review, for the ASRock Fatal1ty X99M KILLER motherboard review, ASRock also kindly leant us an Intel Core i7-5820K and some test DDR4. The test DIMMs were supplied by them in the form of an ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB kit. Being a new technology to pcG, we were rather eager to test them out. Although being non-retail samples, they were supplied without any fancy packaging, but were very well protected and wrapped within a large sheet of pink foam.
Of course we arent really interested in packaging are we? So what does DDR4 bring to the table? Well the most obvious plus is faster native speeds. DDR4 will give you speeds from 2133 to 4266 MT/s Vs DDR3 offered speeds of 800 to 2133 MT/s, DDR4 also brings the benefit of an increased bandwidth at approximately 17GB/s Vs 9.6GB/s of a typical DDR3 DIMM. Then we have increased memory capacity, with DDR3 the densities per DIMM are usually between 512MB and 8GB, DDR4 pushes this up to 2GB minimum DIMM capacity and a maximum of 16GB. This is made all the more interesting as the maximum voltage of the new DDR4 standard is 1.2V (min 1.05V) whilst DDR3 will drink up to 1.65V (min 1.35V). This is all very impressive on paper, but what benefits are we going to gain whilst Gaming? We best take a closer look.

All DDR4 memory modules are tested by ADATAs own test program, MRS. MRS is a proprietary DOS program used for system-level testing. MRS has been proven to provide test coverage that is superior to other SLT programs like memtest86+, RST Pro, and Golden Memory. In addition to test coverage, MRS supports multi-core CPUs and the latest Intel/AMD platforms to ensure efficiency and compatibility.

As basic OEM samples there isnt a lot to shout about aesthetically. These particular DIMMs dont even feature a heat spreader. Is it possible they arent really necessary with the drop in voltage? Perhaps, but an all green PCB isnt the most exciting thing to look at in the world either.

The front of the DIMMs feature eight 512MB Hynix RAM chips which is a good thing. Hynix are currently the worlds second largest manufacturers of memory chips and have earned themselves a reputation for being highly reliable. The only other feature of note being the warranty sticker which also gives us the brand name, model number, type, speed and capacity.
The backs show us Well, nothing at all really. The ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit consists of four 4GB single density DIMMs, hence the memory chips are on the one side. Although very plain, the green PCBs do kinda look like a green on green digital camo.

At the time of writing this review the ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit is currently not available, but will be shortly for an SRRP of 111.99 and offer a limited lifetime warranty.

Hardware Installation

AData DDR4 2133MHz Quad Channel Kit - Installed

Installing the ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit into the temporary X99 test rig featuring the Intel Core i7-5820K and the ASRock Fatal1ty X99M KILLER motherboard was incredibly simple. All four memory slots were occupied by the four 4GB DIMMs that made up the 16GB kit, but slightly obscured by the Cryorig R1 Ultimate used to cool the CPU. Having no heat spreaders meant the DIMMs can be considered low profile, meaning that theyll fit under any CPU cooler you choose to fit in your X99 build (although Id certainly install the RAM before any big air cooler ?? ).

The X99 test rig featuring booted first time without a hitch. With the ASRock Fatal1ty X99M KILLER motherboard UEFI updated via the Internet flash facility to the latest available. The ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit were then automatically set to their native 2133MHz with timings of 15-15-15-36.

Testing Methodology/Setup

The ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit was tested as part of our normal Test Rig, using Windows 7 64Bit (Service Pack 1) with all relevant Drivers installed. Prime95 (Blend) was used to test stability and the following benchmarks were also used.

    Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB 2400MHz @ 11-13-13-3035815375143472646.8 ns

Being the very first DDR4 kit reviewed here at pcG raises one small issue for us. Yep you guessed it! As you can see from the table above, we have no other DDR4 test results to compare them too. So the only feasible comparison we can currently offer is the best of the DDR3 DIMMs weve tested so far here at pcG. They RAM sticks that reside in our current test rigs, the Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB 2400MHz. As you can also see the ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit offer up a faster read, write and copy speed (the write by a massive 13721MB/s), but take a huge hit with latency (a 22ns drop). This is no doubt to the much looser timings, but how will this affect performance in Gaming?

To give us some idea of the effect of DDR4 over DDR3 has on Gaming, weve run the benchmarks below on both the ADATA and our Beast test RAM. The ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB kit was run at its full rated speed of 2133MHz speed, while our test RAM the Kingston HyperX Beast kit was also run on their 2400MHz XMP profile. Lets see how they compare!

    Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB 2400MHz @ 11-13-13-31907114679.90134277.00

As we can see from the above table and benchmarking results from the past, both synthetic benchmarks (Firestrike and Heaven) do benefit from faster RAM. The ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit kit outperformed our HyperX Beast by a whopping 542 in Firestrike and by 85 in Heaven. Sadly though, we are yet to see any gain in the Gaming benchmarks. Will this change in the future? Certainly not anytime soon, but itll be interesting to find out.

    Final Thoughts

The ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit kit arrived at pcG in a rather unorthodox fashion, but was very well wrapped in a large sheet of pink foam (No flashy packaging for these OEM DIMMs ?? ).
Whilst the DIMMs looked pretty unspectacular with their plain green PCB, they are low profile so will fit beneath any CPU cooler you choose for your X99 rig, but with an ultra low voltage of 1.2v this does raise the question of needing a heat spreader at all?
The ADATA U-DIMM kit performs very well topping most of the pcG tests, with only a slightly questionable issue of a high (by comparison to mid/high end DDR3 kits) 68.8 ns latency, of course this wont affect your Gaming experience at all.
With a retail price of 111.99, the ADATA Premier DDR4 2133MHz U-DIMM 16GB Kit kit is one of the cheapest DDR4 kits currently available and proven its certainly no slouch. You may argue DDR4 is still too expensive, but if you compare the price of these DIMMs to a similarly rated quad channel DDR3, youll find they not only work out cheaper but outperform them too. Certainly food for thought for anyone looking at an X99 build.
